Wolf!

story inspiration

The idea for this story came about after a conversation with my Dad. He described a documentary that he’d seen and in it a film maker had befriended a wolf in order to free it from a trap. I never found that documentary but it sounded like an interesting idea and since then I’ve become rather obsessed with wolves myself. I’ve read numerous stories, watched documentaries and listened to podcasts about these amazing creatures. I had no idea they were ecosystem engineers, that in a pack it is the female that is the alpha lead (not the male) and that their extreme loyalty and devotion to each other is what binds a pack together.

Wolves are so often portrayed as the villain in children’s literature. In writing this story I wanted the wolf to be less sinister and show that they too, like any animal, can be vulnerable and in need of help.

synopsis

Maggie is struggling to settle into her new life in the countryside. She misses her old house. The sights and sounds of the city. Her friends. But everything changes when she meets a wolf in the woods. At first she is frightened, until she realises that the wolf is imprisoned in a hunter’s trap and needs her help. In a heart-stopping race against time, Maggie rescues the wolf with a little help from her Dad. This experience not only strengthens her bond with her Dad but it also enables her to develop a love for her new surroundings and a fascination with wolves.
